Quick guide: Free Tours in Cartagena

Free walking tours are guided walks with local guides and no fixed price: at the end, each person tips the guide what they think is fair. They are a great way to get your bearings in Cartagena on your first day and understand its history before exploring on your own.

Available routes

The walled historic center (Clock Tower, Plaza de los Coches, Palace of the Inquisition, the Cathedral and Plaza de la Aduana), the Getsemaní neighborhood with its murals and Plaza de la Trinidad, Gabriel García Márquez's Cartagena in the San Diego neighborhood, and the San Felipe de Barajas Castle. There is also a route combining the historic center and Getsemaní.

Times and duration

The historic center and Getsemaní tours leave every day at 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.; the García Márquez tour at 3:00 p.m. and the Castle tour at 2:00 p.m. They last between 2¼ and 2½ hours.

How do I book?

Booking is free on each operator's official site (Civitatis or Nexperience), from the tour page. You tip in cash at the end of the walk. On the Castle tour, the monument entrance fee is not included.

Tips

Cartagena is hot most of the year: bring water, a hat and sunscreen, and wear comfortable shoes. If you prefer to avoid the strongest sun, choose the afternoon departure.
